Course Description
This advanced course is primarily intended for appraisers who already have a solid foundation in creating USPAP conforming Appraisal Reports to conclude replacement value. It is fast paced, intensive and covers many different intended uses. The intended uses covered in this course require learning methodologies and gaining abilities that go beyond basic “cost approach” valuations. Students will be introduced to most of the typical intended uses that a professional gems and jewelry appraiser might be asked to provide; many of which may expose the appraiser’s report to potential litigation scenarios or review by the IRS. Students will gain the knowledge and confidence to complete challenging assignments such as appraising for estate tax, charitable donation, equitable distribution, insurance loss claims, litigation support, probate, and dissolution of a marriage, to name a few. The curriculum of GJ203 builds upon the terminology, methodology, and valuation theory taught in GJ201 and GJ202. Completion of GJ201 and GJ202 are not required for enrollment; however, students will be expected to have a good understanding of that knowledge base.
Students will increase their competency in recognizing relevant markets and market levels for research, recognition of the relevant characteristics of the properties and how the intended use and definition of value may influence those choices, analysis of comparable sales, reconciliation of analyzed data, and the composition of a convincing, concise narrative to support their value opinions. A multi-item appraisal report that meets the Treasury Regulation requirements of a Qualified Appraisal in addition to USPAP and ASA-GJ requirements is necessary to receive credit for GJ203 (50 credit hours). GJ203 is required for members working toward their accreditation with ASA in Gems & Jewelry. It is recommended for designated ASA members wanting to stay current in their appraisal practice and/or need to complete the Appraisal Foundation’s required 20 hours of Principles of Value education. Every appraiser who wishes to expand their knowledge, their abilities, and to confidently take-on challenging, complex, and potentially lucrative assignments is encouraged to enroll.
Important Information
This GJ203 class is presented via a virtual format and will be taught live by trained, highly qualified and experienced ASA designated instructor(s) over the course of (2) weeks. Students will meet virtually with the instructor(s) three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and engage in discussions, exercises, and post-sessions assignments. There are seven (7) sessions. Students must participate and attend each live session, pass the final exam, and submit a satisfactory multi-item Appraisal Report that meets the requirements of USPAP, ASA-GJ and the statutory requirements of a Treasury defined Qualified Appraisal in order to complete the course and receive credit for GJ203.
Instructional Methods
This course is delivered as a live (virtual) lecture/discussion combined with student exercises and assignments that will be completed during as well as outside of class and discussed in class. There will be a required final appraisal report in order to receive credit for the class. Instructor mentoring will be provided to ensure students have the confidence and competency to complete the required appraisal report within 30 days after the final exam. Emphasis is placed on student participation in discussions as well as course related activities.
Course Audience
This course is intended for any GJ appraiser wanting to advance their knowledge, skills and professional practice by providing valuation services for advanced assignments. This course is a requirement for all ASA members seeking a designation in Gems & Jewelry.
